B4J Thought for the Week. . .

While I was in Chicago last week, I heard an interesting quote that I believe those in the job hunt need to take heart and is what this blog is all about.

Planning without execution is a hallucination.

-Thomas Edison

Without proper planning in the job hunt, we are hallucinating that opportunities will fall into our laps. Good things don’t come easy but with proper preparation, we can be prepared to face challenges with more confidence. I believe that generally speaking luck is nothing but a four letter word. Preparation and planning lead to luck or what I’d like to call desired opportunity.

B4J Tip of the Week

Job fair season is upon us, and it’s a great opportunity to network with companies and recruiters. Print off multiple resume copies, have your personal and professional business cards handy, and look your best!

Approach each recruiter at your top companies and introduce yourself. Don’t forget to have your handshake ready! Inquire about opportunities at their company or any openings they are aware of. Make sure to get a copy of their business card and follow up with an email or handwritten note.

Recruiters, in general are a very networked bunch. This is a great way to find “unadvertised” openings that so many of the experts talk about while rapidly increasing your networking circle. Focus on building several solid and meaningful relationships with a handful of these recruiters. I recommend you offer to meet for lunch or inquire to set up an informational interview.

You’ll be amazed at your success!!

Happy Hunting!

B4J Update

Many of you might notice, the lack of posts this month and for that I apologize. Normally, I don’t use this blog to post personal information. It was created and will continue to be a source of professional information for those in the job hunt. I will however, give you a small update. In the last few weeks I have been promoted into a new role at my current company and have been dealing with some family health issues while trying to adjust to life being pregnant. Yes, that’s right, pregnant. And no worries, these health issues are not my own. I’m 20 weeks along with a due date of Dec. 14.

Thanks for your support!

Cheers!!

B4J’s Tip of the Week

One of my biggest pet peeves as a recruiter is when I contact a candidate and they don’t remember anything about the position or if they actually applied. When this happens, this tells me the candidate doesn’t really care and they are not that interested in the position.

Here’s my recommendation to keep this from happening:

  1. Apply only for positions you are qualified for or serious about. Seriously, it’s a waste of time for you and me.
  2. Keep a tickler file of the positions and date you applied for them. When I was in the hunt, I set up a small file. I printed off the job description off the internet or kept the newspaper with a big circle of the position I applied for. Place the date in which you applied in the right corner of the paper and include any notes.
  3. Keep a log. Keep track of which person you spoke to and about what position. The job seeker appears much more put together and credible when they mention to the hiring manager that Susie, the recruiter and I briefly discussed the position. Nothing drives me crazier when the candidate calls me by the wrong name. At least once a week I am called Jennifer. My name is Jessica. The log will eliminate this problem.

When doing these things, you are more prepared, sure of yourself, and able to wow the hiring manager or recruiter.

Bloggingforjobs is EXPANDING!

I’m excited to announce that my online blog, Bloggingforjobs (http://www.bloggingforjobs.blogspot.com/) is expanding!! My goal is to be one of the top 100 HR blogs in the US. If you are able, help me achieve this honor. Add my link to your page or forward my blog address to your friends. I am tracking site clicks and visits daily to track my progress.

With that in mind, we are in the beginning stages of building a website that includes my blog(s), jobs postings, and other cool online resources for Job Seekers as well as HR Professionals and Recruiters.

My goal is to go live with the website sometime early summer. Once our e-zine and website are live, Greg (my husband) and I will be hosting a kickoff party with close friends and contacts. I’m excited to be able to offer such new and fresh resources to job seekers and a community where they will be able to be educated on the rules of engagement in the job search along with pages and information for established and upcoming Recruiters and HR Professionals.

If you like what you’re seeing, let me know! Leave me comments on my myspace, linkedin, facebook pages or leave a comment here and tell me your thoughts.

Cheers & thanks for your support!
